What You Need to Know About SB 216

Now that California Senate Bill 216 is in effect, licensed contractors are required to show proof of workers’ compensation regardless of whether or not they have employees.
The first phase applies to the following license classifications:
- C-8 Concrete, C-20 HVAC, C-22 Asbestos Abatement, and D-49 Tree Service
- For renewals between January 1, 2023 and June 30, 2023, the CSLB will not renew their license without proof of workers’ compensation coverage.
- License holders with CSLB license renewal dates after June 30, 2023 must file proof of workers’ compensation insurance with the CSLB by July 1, 2023.
- The second phase of SB 216 takes effect on January 1, 2026 and applies to all remaining license classifications.
When you bind a policy with us, we automatically send proof of coverage to the CSLB for contractors in all class codes.
With this new law taking effect, know that we’re here to serve you and your clients. Review CSLB’s letter to all licensees for more information.
