Penalties for Violating Child Labor Laws

The following is not a complete list of child labor law violations, only examples of some penalties and associated violations. See Child Labor Laws, or contact the Division of Labor Standards Enforcement for details.

  • Fines for “Class B” violations range from $500 - $1,000 per violation.
  • Some examples of Class B violations include violations of work permit and work hours requirements.
  • Fines for Class A violations range from $5,000 - $10,000 per violation.
  • Some examples of Class A violations include employing underage youths in hazardous occupations, and other violations that present a danger to youths.
  • Fines for criminal violations of child labor laws range up to $10,000 or 6 months in the county jail, or a combination of both.

Some examples of criminal violations include the willful employment of minors under age 16 in vocations dangerous to the life of the minor, and the willful employment of minors under 18 in immoral vocations.
