An Acclaimed Ergonomics Program

In August 2004, the Oxford Research Institute (ORI) awarded State Fund’s ergonomics program its prestigious Five Star Preferred Provider of Ergonomics Services Seal. This achievement is based upon an independent and thorough assessment of the program. Criteria included evaluating the technical expertise of each Certified Industrial Ergonomist on staff, direct feedback from a random sample of clients regarding the quality and level of satisfaction of service received from the staff, and the length of time these specialized services have been available from State Fund.

ORI, a non-profit corporation founded in 1977, is an ergonomics certification and accreditation organization that fosters ergonomics to improve human safety and systems performance. ORI has evaluated and awarded its Five Star Seal to major corporations and only one other workers’ compensation carrier. The ORI also evaluates and accredits major academic institutions that offer graduate-level and research programs in ergonomics and human factors.

Training and Experience

State Fund has Certified Industrial Ergonomists (CIEs) licensed by ORI. The requirements for CIE certification ensure that our ergonomics program is backed by significant training and experience. These requirements include:

  • At least five years experience employed full-time as an Ergonomist.
  • Must submit two letters of recommendation from professional sponsors employed in the same technical field. These professional peers must recommend the applicant for professional certification and personally know of the applicant’s capability, knowledge, and professional expertise over the past five years.
  • Submit formal evidence of professional technical ergonomics applied-knowledge contributions, in the form of applicant-authored books, technical reports, formal publications, conference presentations, or research reports authored for clients.
  • Passing score on a 2-4 hour written examination, given by the Oxford Research Institute.

In addition, State Fund has one Associate Ergonomics Professional (AEP) licensed by the Board of Certification in Professional Ergonomics (BCPE). AEP is an interim designation that is granted to individuals who meet the educational, but not the work experience, criteria for Certified Professional Ergonomist (CPE). An individual with the AEP designation is considered to be an "ergonomist in training" who has six years to complete three years of full-time practice and transition to the CPE designation. The requirements include:

  • A master’s degree in human factors/ergonomics, or an equivalent educational background in the life sciences, engineering sciences and behavioral sciences to comprise a professional level of ergonomic education.
  • Achieves a passing score on Part I ("Basic Knowledge" of human factors/ergonomics) of the CPE/CHFP examination.
  • Is currently working toward fulfilling the requirement of three years full-time experience as a human factors/ergonomics professional.
